Most moms learn about newborn sleep the hard way

We get endless advice about what to buy before baby gets here — the crib, the stroller, the car seat, the swaddles, the bottles — and we spend hours preparing for birth, but most of us go into motherhood unprepared and unaware of newborn sleep habits. We don’t even really talk about it - for some reason we just accept that it’s chaotic and that we’ll figure it out along the way.

So most of us only learn about newborn sleep the hard way - when we’re already exhausted, feeling alone and endlessly googling in the dark. It’s only when we’re tired, drained, and feeling like we’re failing at this that we start asking for advice. And then it starts: the information overload, the conflicting advice from everyone and the overwhelm.

And the risks are real: sleep deprivation is the #1 cause of post-partum depression in mothers.

But we don’t actually have to wait for that moment, because the answers are out there and there is so much we can learn before baby gets here (it’s just that nobody told us this…).

The 5 things you need to know about newborn sleep that no one talks about

Below are the 5 things I wish every mum knew before bringing baby home (and if you only read this part, I’ve done my job, because I want to spread the word about this).

Why? Because if you know about them, you can use them, and if you use them you can skip past those 2am moments to a place of calm, confident, relief. You can create calmer nights, predictable days, wake up rested, and enjoy those beautiful dreamy newborn days.

  • Amongst others, a baby is born with three natural reflexes: sucking, crying and calming. Yes, you read correctly – as natural as crying and sucking comes to a newborn, so too does settling. The calming reflex is almost like a switch that when certain steps are performed exactly right your baby will stop fussing or crying and will start to fall asleep by themselves. All babies react in this same way; they calm down when the steps are followed in exactly the right order. The steps are known as the 5 S's and are: Swaddle, Side-lying, Shushing, Swaying, Sucking.

  • Simply put, a sleep environment is your baby's sleep space and the conditions in that space. Understanding your baby's sleep environment can help improve their sleep (which improves yours too) and will ensure that you create the safest possible space for them to sleep in. A safe sleep space follows the 3 F's: Firm, Flat and Free. And a sleep environment that promotes great rest is built on Comfort (Temperature), Darkness and Sound. Within the newborn stage, these need to be tweaked to maximize rest and prevent occurences like Day Night Confusion.

  • A sleep routine helps newborns, toddlers and preschoolers alike transition from fun, active, awake time to calm, restful, sleep time. The routine acts as a signal for your baby's brain that it is time to get ready for sleep and whilst newborns don't yet understand words, their brains are already able to follow these and other signals. A sleep routine is a set of steps you follow with your baby before every sleeping occurrence - daytime naps and nighttime - that are highly effective and work every single time.

  • The words “newborn” and “independent” typically do not go hand in hand, but when they are well-rested, have a full tummy and know that you are always present they can: happily lie on a play mat in a safe space, dreamily staring up at the ceiling; they can lie in a stroller, awake, content and relaxed while you and a friend have coffee; they can be swaddled and placed in their bassinet, gazing into space whilst slowly drifting off to sleep by themselves; and they can wake from their nap, happily taking in the world around them for a few moments without fussing before you fetch them.

  • What the vast majority of parents do not know is that there is a gentle daily rhythm you can follow called SLEEP-EAT-PLAY-REPEAT that supports both the baby's development and the parent's well-being. Following this flow provides you with a calm, predictable structure; it supports newborn development by weaving together sleep, feeding, attachment, care, safety, and predictability; it ensures that a baby's longest stretch of sleep happens at night (which is also the most restorative, developmental and aligns with the family's); and it also makes it easier to predict and troubleshoot a baby's needs as you know what needs to happen when, so you can respond with confidence instead of guesswork.

And probably the most important tip for your journey ahead… You don't need to join that “no sleep club" (and if you already joined, it’s never too late to drop that membership)

Nobody needs to join the "no sleep club", because the (pediatrician-approved) truth is that once your newborn reaches their birth weight, their night feeds can be extended in a way that is both safe and healthy. Yes… I’m not kidding… So whilst it is true that in the first 2-3 weeks you will wake every 2-3 hours to feed, after that these feeds can be given further and further apart. As a guide: by 1 month a newborn can sleep a single stretch at night of 5 hours, by 2 months - 7 hours, by 3 months - 8 hours, by 4 months - 10 hours and by 5 months - 12 hours. Some might get there faster, some a little slower; but everyone can.

What every new mama should experience

  • A calm confidence in their ability to soothe and manage their baby’s sleep

  • The ability to just breathe - feeling and waking up rested without anxious thoughts

  • Never experiencing that relentless tiredness or knot-in-the-stomach worry

  • Feeling energized and present from sleeping so well, instead of running on autopilot

  • More time for bonding: playing without distraction, soaking in those day-time smiles

  • Calm nights that lead to a happier partnership and smoother days with siblings

  • A general sense that home life runs on gentler rhythms rather than constant crisis mode.

  • Knowing that they're supported, connected and understood

Hey, I’m Lara, and I created an approach so moms can have that dreamy newborn experience they deserve

I’m Lara, a pediatric sleep specialist certified by both the Institute of Pediatric Sleep & Parenting and the College of Montessori (from whom I got a preschool educator qualification). As founder of Lara’s Little Dreamers I specialize in newborn, baby and toddler sleep, and I’ve helped families navigate everything from early wakeups to bedtime struggles.

My mission is simple: I want to spread the word that there is SO MUCH mothers can learn about newborn sleep before birth that will help prevent them the chaos and trauma that so many of us had to go through, because we weren’t aware of it.

My Story: When I was pregnant with my first, I didn’t know what to expect. And when he arrived there was unfortunately so much that simply didn’t come naturally. We were always reacting, I didn’t know what he needed when, I had no idea how to soothe him or stop his fussing, and we felt lucky when he eventually fell asleep. It’s fair to say that I simply never knew how much I didn’t know. I had to learn everything on the go and it was exhausting, draining, and at times felt traumatic. And I remember thinking so many times: why didn’t anybody tell me this?

Over time I began piecing things together: like how to instantly soothe him; how to feed him at the right times so I’d know when he’s hungry next and that he’d still go to sleep with a full tummy; how to put him to sleep quickly and easily; and how to manage his day sleep so he’d sleep through the night. And as I learnt these essentials everything changed. He started sleeping for long stretches. Our days became predictable, and we started sleeping through the night again. First a handful of hours, then more, then a full 8 to 9 hours per night. By four months old, my first was sleeping twelve hours a night and my second eleven hours. And throughout he became a content, happy, dreamy baby.

What I learnt from helping other families, my certifications and my own experience, is that not knowing is not our fault. It’s skills which we lost along the way as families changed how they lived together over the ages. Now, I’m here to share these skills with you and other moms just like you so that we can all make the most of the newborn stage. And that’s the purpose of The Dreamy Approach.

What Exactly The Dreamy Approach Will Teach You

Introduction:
Principles Of Newborn Sleep

✔ Understand how sleep supports development — and exactly how much a newborn needs when.

✔ The core sleep foundations — awake windows, sleep pressure, etc. — and working with them.

✔ Recognize what’s happening during each growth stage, so you can spot progress even when it feels like a setback.

Essential 1:
Soothing Your Baby, Gently

✔ Tap into your baby’s natural calming reflex to soothe them in a way that feels instinctive and loving.

✔ Use the “5 S’s” with confidence to ease fussiness and help your baby settle quickly.

Create a soothing routine that makes your baby feel safe, secure, and ready for rest.

Essential 2:
Creating a Safe & Soothing Sleep Space

✔ Set up a cozy, calm, and secure sleep environment for both you and your baby.

✔ Follow safe sleep guidelines with confidence, so you can rest easy knowing your baby is protected.

✔ Adjust the sleep space as your baby grows to keep conditions ideal at every stage.

Essential 3:
Building Gentle Sleep Routines

Create simple routines that guide your baby into sleep quickly and easily, day or night.

Adapt routines as your baby grows, so sleep stays smooth through every stage.

Build a routine others can follow too, so you’re not the only one who can tuck your baby in.

Essential 4:
Encouraging Gentle Independence

Support your baby’s independence while staying connected, present, and responsive.

✔ Encourage short stretches of solo play and exploration to build confidence.

✔ Put the buildings blocks of self‑soothing skills in place without any pressure or crying whatsoever.

Essential 5:
Shaping a Smooth Daily Rhythm

Create a gentle, flexible daily rhythm that balances nourishment, play, and rest.

✔ Time feedings to keep your baby content during the day and sleeping longer and longer at night as time passes.

Guide naps and bedtime so your baby gets the rest they need to grow and thrive.

The Value of a Calm, Confident Start

By now, you’ve probably already invested in the essentials:

✔ Stroller: €450–€1,000

✔ Infant car seat: €250–€500

✔ Crib & mattress: €300–€700

✔ Baby monitor: €120–€300

✔ Swaddles, bottles & gear: €100+

That’s easily €1,200–€2,500 spent before your baby even comes home and we’re not even considering whether you also created a new nursery, did for a birthing course, hired a doula.

But the gist of it is that whilst these items are essential, and they’re great and exciting to get, none of them provide us with the skills our little ones need from us.

For €27 per month, The Dreamy Approach gives you the tools, rhythms, and support to feel calm, confident, and prepared — the one investment that makes all the others finally pay off.

You Might Be Wondering…

Yeah, okay, Lara, but what if… I simply get an easy baby?

That’s exactly why The Dreamy Approach is built as a flexible framework. Whether your baby is easygoing, extra fussy, or somewhere in between, you’ll know how to adapt from day one.

Sure, but what if… My baby is “different” — extra fussy, colicky, or just won’t sleep unless held

The Dreamy Approach is designed for real babies, not textbook ones. You’ll learn gentle, responsive strategies that work even if your little one doesn’t follow the “rules.”

And what if… I have questions once my baby arrives?

You won’t be left on your own. With the included support, you’ll have guidance when you need it most — so you can feel calm and confident, even in the middle of the night.
